So is this whole everything-old-is-new-again-AND-IN-3D thing gonna be a trend we're gonna have to suffer through? Because Final Destination is doing that as well.

I think so. Seems like an easy way to make money. Toy Story 1&2 are coming out in 3D as well.

Mildly NSFW
Perhaps it belongs in Picture of the Day, but it's considerably more WTF appropriate:

Though I don't think the fruit fly article's title is completely accurate...it seems to be more like conditioning than memories

That might be a good thing if not having that job meant not having to stab yourself again the next day.

School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/02/17/school-used-student.html

Quote:
According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins's child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence. The suit is a class action, brought on behalf of all students issued with these machines.

Emphasis added. I know a student there.

I saw the story earlier, do you know any more details than what was reported in the article? I was curious to find out whether the cameras were actually remotely activated/left on or if they just snooped on his hard drive for pics he may have taken himself thinking they'd find something suspicious.
If the cameras were left on, it seems likely that the cameras could have software running which would continuously broadcast to a website which the school could use to monitor the students...considering how tech inept a lot of school admins are this makes me extremely worried that the software is from a generic live broadcast maybe-you-have-to-have-a-password-to-view-maybe-not site...and that adds a whole other level to this.
If the cameras were left on/turned on on purpose without student's knowledge there better be some massive criminal cases happening shortly to deal with the people responsible.

I suspect that the school has more direct access than simply snooping on the hard drive. I don't know if the school turned the camera on directly or if the student had something running where the camera's feed was on the desktop at the time, but I don't think it was as simple as snooping.

I heard earlier from another person who knows the student I know that "the school announced today via the loudspeakers that it was not true but the students don't believe it because they've all had the experience of the little green camera light popping on unexpectedly".

Also, it looks like this is fairly common now: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/learning/schools/how-google-saved-a-school.html The piece starts out as a "the good technology does in the classroom" sort of piece. But around 4:30 in it, it goes to the assistant principal watching the kid's screen while they use their own webcam. There's no comment on the matter really except for a quick laugh line.

That's pretty disturbing(that this isn't an isolated case)...though i guess better then the version i had in mind with the shitty tech. Still hoping for criminal charges.

Edit: just read the comments on the google article and wow...not a one mentions how messed up it is to have a camera constantly monitoring students. And almost all are a variation of "why should we waste laptops/money/resources on stupid kids"...sad
